Growing up I never had pets, but I was so lucky to still be around animals like dogs, cats, fishes, hamsters, birds, parrots, lizards, snakes, and turtles thanks to all my cousins.
The love and care that my family dedicated to their home creatures was precious.
Never could I have EVER imagined an individual harming them.
In fact, when one would pass away, it was as devastating as it is for a human being to pass.
That was the love we had for them.
Yet the older I became, the reality of how animals were being treated and tortured unfolded. Precisely those businesses and corporations that showcase our lovely animals to our kids are the ones to put up a facade masking their acts of abuse.
But you see “Loving animals means loving ALL animals, not just the ones we share our homes with.”
A warm and gratifying welcome to a friend of many years. Someone who demands to shed light on an ongoing issue. A heart-wrenching issue that everyone should take seriously like we take human rights issues seriously.
Meet Camila Escobar, 21.
People call it an obsession, I call this a profound passion.
Surrounding myself with animals has brought many emotions that I never thought I would feel concerning animals. An emotion related to love, compassion, happiness, and more than anything, sympathy.
Since I was a little girl I was always around these amazing and magical creatures. I went from having to feed my dogs to bathing and feeding horses, milking cows, and petting pigs. While being a young girl in my eyes animals were pure and I would never in a million years think of people harming them, but little did I know that CRUELTY was a major issue happening in the animal world.
As I grew up, I began to investigate and the more I would research and educate myself about what would happen to our animals in this world, I was in disbelief. My heart aches each and every time I would see what they did to our poor and helpless creatures.
The dark side of animal cruelty: Captivity.
Our animals are kept in zoos, aquariums, circus’ and festivals. All for our entertainment. The show that our animals perform for us is trained through physical abuse. Our creatures suffer pain, restriction, and lack of hunting and survival skills with the result that the captivators make money and the audience receives laughs, smiles, and endless phone footage. Our animals live through depression and anxiety just like any other human would. Being taken away from their natural habitat and their family causes that mental illness.
Can you imagine being 12,000 pounds, 26 feet long being kept in a tiny pool for the past 20 years? A dolphin being captive can.
Can you imagine being 700 pounds, 12 feet long being kept in a tiny cage for the past 20 years?
A tiger being captive can.
Can you imagine being 350 pounds, 6 feet long being kept in a tiny gated land for the past 20 years? A gorilla being captive can.
It brings sadness to my heart to recognize that our animals are a great part of these businesses and it’s the only outcome for them is pain and torture.
Society is not fully aware of the dark side of the animal world and what these creatures go through behind cages and bars. Millions of animals are physically and mentally abused every single day. Which is why I am here. This is my purpose. I am their voice. I want to educate society, understand, and aid animals. I am 21 years old currently a Biology major in the process of finishing my bachelor’s degree and my next goal is attending veterinary school.
I believe in a better world. And in order to change the world for the better, it begins in our home, in our community, within our people. To spread the word, share the knowledge, commit to educating, and most of all...
